Smearing faeces

Smearing faeces

Faecal smearing is an activity that involves touching the faeces or poo.

As there is a lot of stigma around smearing it's hard to talk about it or seek help because it can evoke a shock response in others and ourselves as parents/carers. With support, smearing can be minimised or eliminated.

Acknowledging that each person has their own reason for smearing is essential and there are many sensory reasons for smearing. Not just the feel, smell or look of it, but sometimes a person does not sense that they need to pass a stool or that they have done so - smearing can be an exploration of faecal matter that is not connected with the idea of “this is my poo”.
